Our Genetics

THE FIRST GENETIC SUPPLIER to promote the on-site production of parent gilt replacements, Babcock introduced the Grandparent Program in 1973. The introduction of on-farm performance testing in 1989 allowed producers to utilize ultrasound, E.P.D.'s and indexing (performance testing), to choose their replacement gilts and close their herds to all gilt introductions. The adoption of artificial insemination technology now allows producers to close their herds to ALL live animal introductions, through Babcock's Closed Herd™ System.

THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE of the Closed Herd™ System is to lower the cost of production while still producing high quality pork. It is well known that disease problems erode profitability, and the best way to prevent disease from being introduced is to eliminate live animal introductions. This system allows producers to close their herds and achieve superior genetic performance and improvement.

TODAY'S CONSUMER is looking for a meat product with great color, consistent quality, and exceptional taste. The key to meeting the demands of the entire pork chain is on-going research. For more than 25 years, Babcock has been working to lead the industry toward making pork the consumer's meat of choice. Certified Babcock Pork™ has been proven superior in leanness and taste in test after test. Continuing in this tradition, our pork quality research projects focus on pork quality traits that are important to our industry and our customers to guarantee their competitive edge in the marketplace.
