Leading the Industry
Innovations since 1968
IN 1969, Babcock Industries, the largest supplier of egg producing chickens, purchased Midwestern Pork Producers to begin their swine division. Dr. Ron Lindvall and Dr. Andy Wyatt, Ph.D. geneticists, started the nucleus herd by removing the pigs from selected matings by hysterectomy. Descendents of these original animals make up the entire nucleus herd in use today, which has been closed to live animal introductions for over 30 years.
BABCOCK SELLS GENETICS both in the United States and Internationally. Babcock has established breeding farms in Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Costa Rica, Hong Kong, Thailand, the Philippines, and the Sakhalin Islands of Russia.
IN 1979, Dr. James Schneider, a former professor of animal science at Iowa State University, joined Babcock as our senior geneticist. Based at Babcock's Research Center near LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Dr. Schneider continues to supervise the research and innovation that make improvements in quality lean gain every year.
BABCOCK was the first major breeder to promote on-farm parent gilt replacement production with the introduction of the Grandparent Program in 1973. In 1989, Babcock offered a replacement gilt production program that allowed producers access to the newest technology, ultrasound, E.P.D.'s, indexing, and the ability to close their herd to all gilt introductions. The introduction and adoption of artificial insemination technology has allowed producers to completely close their herds to ALL live animal introductions through Babcock's Closed Herd™ System.
A LEADER in swine genetic research, innovation, and closed herd technology, Babcock is in its fourth decade of specific selection for economic traits that make our customers successful in the swine industry. Current genetic improvement is built upon our history of genetic innovations that began in 1968 and continue today, allowing us to maintain our reputation as a supplier of the finest quality genetics to producers worldwide.
