Start Pigs Off Right - Reduce Farrow Death Loss

Production Tip from Fox Ridge, L.L.C.

A helpful tip for getting new born pigs off to a good start was observed at Fox Ridge, L.L.C. of Corsica, South Dakota, a Land O’ Lakes 2400 sow weanling unit.

They put all the small pigs on a fresh farrowed sow, then 24 hours later put these same pigs on another fresh farrowed sow. This gives the small pigs a triple dose of colostrum and Fox Ridge a 5% death loss, while producing 24 pigs/sow/year. They put 12 pigs on every sow farrowed, and wean an average of 11.4 pigs per litter.

The use of Babcock’s Closed Herd™ program combined with Fox Ridge’s innovative management practices make this one of the best weanling units in the L.O.L. system.
