Certified Babcock Pork: Produced and Branded in Japan
The Story of BabPork™
Babcock has been a major supplier of swine genetics in Japan since 1981. Through this association, Babcock became one of the industry leaders in pork quality.
The pork market in Japan was different that the U.S. pork market. In Japan, it was recognized early on that the eating qualities of pork would suffer if the primary criteria determining quality and packer premiums was leanness. At this time, Babcock recognized the need for selection of specific genetic lines for specific markets, and also the development of exclusive selection and indexing criteria for each market.
After a few years, Babcock's customers in Japan realized that there was a recognizable pork quality advantage with Babcock Certified Pork. In order to market this pork, they developed the brand name BabPork™. Today BabPork™ is considered to be the top pork in Japan for eating quality.
Today, U.S. slaughter plants have also recognized the sacrifices made to pork quality through the pursuit of lean, and are working to shift their emphasis to pork's eating qualities. See Pork Markets Today for more information about how Babcock is helping the packing industry develop pork specifically for each of their markets.
